GTA 6 Leaks Explained

On September 18, 2022, a user going by "teapotuberhacker" posted roughly 90 videos of early GTA 6 development footage to the GTAForums message board, along with claims of access to source code. It was one of the largest leaks in video-game history and confirmed, for the first time, that the next Grand Theft Auto was set in a modern Vice City.

The footage came from an unfinished development build — placeholder assets, debug menus, work-in-progress everything — so it showed where the game was in 2022, not how it would look at launch. That distinction matters: a lot of what people "saw" was years from final.

The leak was traced to Arion Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group who was 17 at the time (18 by his 2023 trial) — the same group tied to a 2022 wave of breaches that included Uber. According to the trial, Kurtaj carried out the Rockstar hack from a hotel room while under police protection on bail, using a phone, the hotel TV, and an Amazon Fire Stick.

It was not a Rockstar insider or a "planned" reveal — it was a criminal network intrusion.

Kurtaj was found by a jury in 2023 to have carried out the acts. Because he had been assessed with severe autism and deemed not fit to stand trial in the usual sense, the jury’s task was to decide whether he did the acts rather than to return a conventional guilty verdict.

In December 2023, a UK court ordered him detained in a secure hospital indefinitely, after being told he still intended to return to cybercrime. It remains one of the highest-profile prosecutions to come out of a video-game leak.

The 2022 leak is unusual because so much of it was later confirmed by Rockstar itself. The Vice City / Leonida setting, the modern-day timeframe, and the two playable protagonists — eventually named Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos — all appeared in the leak before Rockstar made them official in the December 2023 reveal and the 2025 follow-up.

Separately, Rockstar’s first official trailer leaked online roughly a day early in December 2023, prompting the studio to release it ahead of schedule. So two very different "leaks" — a criminal hack and an early trailer — both shaped how GTA 6 was revealed.

On August 18, 2026, two apparent gameplay clips and images of an alleged full Leonida map spread online. Major outlets reported copyright takedowns against reposts. Rockstar has not authenticated the material, and even genuine development footage can show an older build rather than the final game.

The map coverage reports five county labels, Jason’s home marker in the Keys, several racetrack-like layouts, and a possible southern military airfield. Those are useful leads, not official facts. The sequence reached ten reported clips by August 23. Separately, coverage described an Xbox Graphics Capture file containing map models, textures, and telemetry. That second map-data report is not attributed to Cyberleek, and none of the later gameplay confirms the first overview as a final map.

Take-Two also filed DMCA subpoena requests seeking identifying records from Microsoft and Discord. Cyberleek’s public site and Telegram channel reportedly went offline temporarily on August 22, before the ninth and tenth clips appeared the next day.

Check the source chain, not the clip. Genuine leaks historically surfaced on established venues (GTAForums, credible reporters) and were quickly corroborated; AI fakes appear on fresh accounts with no history and never hold up to scrutiny. Look for tell-tale AI artifacts — warping text and UI, morphing geometry, impossible physics, and audio that doesn’t match.

And apply the simplest test: if it isn’t on Rockstar’s Newswire or an official channel, treat it as unconfirmed. When something is genuinely confirmed, we log it across this site — and flag what merely gets reported.
