GTA 6 Map Size vs GTA 5

Short version: Rockstar developers now provide comparative scale statements, but not exact dimensions. Post-show reporting puts GTA 6 at roughly twice GTA 5 overall and about three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area. Every figure below is labelled by source and scope so unlike measurements do not get combined.

Survey advisory

Developer comparisons exist. Exact area still does not.

It’s common to turn “roughly twice GTA 5” into a square-mile answer by multiplying a fan-measured GTA 5 footprint. That is not an official measurement. Rockstar has not published either game’s exact boundary, scale bar, square miles, or square kilometers.

GTA 5 · Community estimates ~29–49 sq mi Land-only to land-plus-water
GTA 6 · Developer-attributed comparison ~2× GTA 5 Overall map comparison · exact area unknown

Comparison and measurement are different evidence types; both are itemized below.

Published GTA 5 map-size estimates

Source Figure Methodology
Higher community estimate ~49 sq mi (~127 km²) Counts full playable area including open ocean and the Alamo Sea
Lower community estimate ~29–31 sq mi (~75–80 km²) Land-only calculation, excluding water; roughly a 70/30 land-to-water split

Published GTA 6 comparisons and estimates

Source Figure Methodology
Rockstar comparison reported by The New York Times ~3x RDR2 playable area Developer comparison; no exact square-mile or square-kilometer figure published
Rob Nelson comparison in sanctioned preview coverage ~2x GTA 5 overall Developer-attributed comparison; baseline boundaries not published
Historical GTA 6 Guide editorial estimate ~1.5–2x GTA 5 Pre-August 27 synthesis of trailer geometry and Leonida’s six confirmed regions
Higher fan/community estimates ~2–2.7x GTA 5 Frame-by-frame trailer measurement and leaked-map overlay projects; methodology and confidence vary widely by source

Whichever multiple ends up closer to reality, the size comes from Leonida’s six confirmed regions — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga — not one uniform sprawl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Rockstar confirmed how big the GTA 6 map is?

Rockstar has not published exact square miles or square kilometers. It has now provided comparative scale statements through developer interviews and sanctioned previews: about three times RDR2’s playable area and roughly twice GTA 5 overall.

So how big was GTA 5’s map, really?

It depends who you ask and what they counted. Community estimates for Los Santos and Blaine County range from about 29–31 square miles (land only) to about 49 square miles (land plus water). Both figures come from fan calculations using in-game distances, not a Rockstar-published number.

What’s the most reliable estimate for GTA 6’s map size?

The best current evidence is comparative, not dimensional: about three times RDR2’s playable area and roughly twice GTA 5 overall. Any conversion into square miles still inherits uncertain community measurements for the older games.

Why can’t we just calculate the exact size from the trailers?

Trailers show curated shots, not a top-down map or a distance scale. Any calculation from them requires assumptions — vehicle speed, camera lens distortion, travel time between recognizable landmarks — that different analysts handle differently, which is exactly why published estimates disagree by as much as 2x.

Does a bigger map mean a better game?

Not necessarily, and it’s worth being skeptical of that framing. Leonida is built from six distinct regions (Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga) rather than one sprawling generic space — Rockstar’s own messaging leans on regional variety and density, not raw square mileage, as the selling point.
