Hammer
Melee
The Hammer is a melee tool-weapon that appeared in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto V, and Grand Theft Auto Online, and it is due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI, having already been spotted in the game's first trailer. It was also planned for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories but was cut from both during development before returning in later titles. Across its appearances it has typically been depicted as a wooden-handled claw hammer suited equally to construction work and blunt-force combat.
Shown officially Rockstar has shown this in a trailer, the Extended Look, an official screenshot, artwork, or its own site.

GTA VI Evidence Limits
No further GTA VI-specific details are recorded for the Hammer beyond its confirmed presence. There are no supplied trailer timestamps, screenshot captions, promotional placements, regional locations, handling details, shop listings, prices, modifications, or named users for the upcoming game.
Its Tool classification is established, but the available information does not identify a GTA VI manufacturer or a distinct in-game variant. Descriptions of reach, damage, vehicle effects, and motorcycle use belong to earlier releases and cannot be treated as confirmed GTA VI behaviour.
Vice City Store Weapon
In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the Hammer had a grey metal head and a red-and-black grip. Tommy Vercetti handled it in much the same fashion as the Baseball Bat and Nightstick. It was a purchasable weapon rather than a map pickup: Bunch of Tools in Washington Beach and Tooled Up at North Point Mall each sold it for $20, while Screw This in Little Havana stocked it for the same price after “Phnom Penh ’86”.
A worker drops one during “Jury Fury”, and another worker uses one in the yard in “The Fastest Boat”. Within Vice City’s blunt melee group, it was described as the weakest option: unlike many comparable weapons, one blow would not knock an opponent down, and its short reach could push targets beyond striking distance. It remained inexpensive, easy to buy, and light, but the Screwdriver surpassed it in every stated respect except that the Hammer could damage cars.
V and Online Changes
Grand Theft Auto V brought the Hammer back with a wooden shaft and black head, replacing the earlier colour scheme while otherwise retaining the 3D-era design. It was used one-handed, like the Crowbar and other club-style melee weapons. It was considered close to the Crowbar in power, while its faster swing and greater reach could catch a running target when timed correctly.
At the right distance, a strike could hit an opponent’s face and instantly incapacitate or kill them. Repeated blows could dent vehicles, remove components, and eventually damage a vehicle until it caught fire. An unusable example appears in the Maintenance Tunnel. In the original release, Special or Collector’s Edition owners could take one from Ammu-Nation without charge. In the Enhanced Version, Ammu-Nation sold it for $500 after “Repossession”; returning Special or Collector’s Edition players received it free.
Grand Theft Auto Online sold the Hammer at Ammu-Nation for $500 at every rank, again free to returning Special or Collector’s Edition players. Unlike the single-player use described above, Online allowed its one-handed attacks from a motorcycle. In “First Dose 2 - Designated Driver”, one may be taken from one of two workers’ bodies near the Packer on Terminal’s east side, if that pickup appears. Once acquired in Online, it remains permanently in the player inventory.
Removed Development Versions
The Hammer was planned for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where development script notes list three intended pickups: at Ocean Docks under an industrial-looking structure, in a Las Colinas shack yard, and on an unfinished road in King’s. The finished game contains no Hammer model, though its texture remains in the shared gun_melee texture image and had been reused from Vice City. The default.ide file also lists it among deliberately disabled Vice City items.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories likewise had an early Hammer plan. It would have reused the Vice City model but applied Hand Axe textures. Its texture container lacks a HUD icon, indicating that removal happened at an early stage. Assets left in Lucid Games’ mobile port, which uses an earlier GTA3.IMG build, include traces of it. Grand Theft Auto IV later used a Hammer only as a prop in construction-worker animations.
