The Boat Trailer is a towable utility trailer from Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online that is due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI. It was first spotted in the opening shot of the first trailer, hitched to a Bobcat XL and carrying an unnamed bow-rider motorboat, and it features a padded single-axle metal frame with a jockey wheel and brake at the front.
First Trailer Footage
At 0:02 of Grand Theft Auto VI’s first trailer, a Bobcat XL is shown towing the Boat Trailer in the opening scene. The trailer is carrying an unidentified bow-rider motorboat. This is the recorded GTA VI appearance; the footage does not identify the boat by name.
Use in Earlier Games
The Boat Trailer previously appeared in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online as a towable light trailer. In Grand Theft Auto V, Bobcat XLs and Bisons frequently pulled empty examples around Sandy Shores. Other recorded placements included a rare Dinghy-carrying version around Cypress Flats, the Vespucci Helipad boat ramp, a location beside Del Perro Pier near a Sandking XL, and a daytime Paleto Bay beach spawn near The Hen House, usually beside a Bison.
Another parked example could appear outside a yellow house on Joshua Road, north of Harmony and south of the railroad bridge; a Voodoo might also be present there. The trailer could carry several boat types, including the Squalo and Dinghy, but a boat that had been removed could not be loaded back onto it.
Tow Vehicle Compatibility
Game files list the Bison, its McGill-Olsen and The Mighty Bush versions, the Bobcat XL, the Sadler, its snow version, the Insurgent Pick-Up Custom, and the Technical Custom as compatible towing vehicles. The APC is also listed in those data, although it does not successfully tow the trailer during play.
The Seminole, Rancher XL, and BeeJay XL were once included as possible towing vehicles in vehicles.meta. They lack the tow-hitch dummy needed to connect them. The Bodhi and Chernobog have tow hitches but no corresponding trailer entries in their vehicle data, leaving their intended compatibility uncertain.
Road Behaviour and Stability
The trailer has low durability and a low centre of gravity. It can move nimbly behind a towing vehicle, yet it may bounce at high speed and can detach on hills. Its own handling entry exists despite the fact that the trailer cannot be driven independently.
Carrying a boat creates further stability problems in turns. With no suspension, the boat’s weight can make the trailer overturn. A player can stand on a moving trailer and its loaded boat without being thrown off.
Dinghy Loading Anomalies
During the Humane Raid - EMP setup in GTA Online, Bobcat XLs and Sadlers can sometimes pull trailers carrying Dinghies that do not fit correctly. These appearances are treated as a glitch because the Dinghy cannot sit fully within the trailer’s frame.
A purpose-built Dinghy-loaded Boat Trailer was later added with The Chop Shop update. In a Salvage Yard Robbery involving La’oub Princess, the player steals this trailer and uses the Dinghy to reach the vessel.
