The Tow Truck is a Vapid utility vehicle from GTA V whose design derives from GTA IV's Yankee, sharing its cabin, flat bumper and front lights while adding a towing bed, roof-mounted horns and other work-truck details. It is due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI.

GTA VI trailer appearance

The Vapid Tow Truck appears at 0:51 in the first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer. It drives past the roadside “Leonida Man” dancer, who is beside a Ruiner on a freeway. This trailer shot is the stated evidence for its GTA VI appearance.

Reworked recovery equipment

The GTA VI version differs visibly from the GTA V truck at the rear. Its rear face carries diagonal yellow-and-black hazard markings and what looks like a 24-hour recovery-service graphic. The highest rear lamps have been removed in favour of decals, while the earlier rotating amber beacons appear to have been replaced by an amber LED light bar.

Its towing gear is also redesigned: both the tow arm and the vehicle-carrying arrangement differ from the GTA V model. Rear outrigger legs are visible in the trailer footage.

GTA V operating role

In GTA V, the Tow Truck is a medium-truck utility vehicle made by Vapid and operated by Casey’s Highway Clearance. It normally has a weathered, rusty finish, with the cab and recovery body appearing in either white or red. It uses the industrial-style wheels also fitted to vehicles including the Phantom and Mule.

The truck has a CB radio. Trucker dialogue may play even when the normal radio is switched off, but only when Trevor is being played in Blaine County.

Towing and road behaviour

The GTA V truck uses rear-wheel drive, a longitudinally installed turbocharged twin-cam four-cylinder engine, and a four-speed transmission. Its engine audio is shared with other light trucks and with its scrap-and-salvage counterpart. It can achieve high speeds for its role, although its weight makes acceleration slow and inputs less responsive.

A long wheelbase gives it a broad turning circle, but its mass helps it remain composed through fast turns and lets it push smaller vehicles aside. Its durability is high. Compared with the scrap-and-salvage equivalent, it has stronger acceleration and a higher maximum speed.

Like the smaller tow truck, it attaches vehicles by backing its hook into position and adjusting crane height until the connection registers with a clunk. Its raised body and larger crane allow it to handle larger vehicles. The arm moves up and down, on a larger scale than the smaller truck’s mechanism. Tow Trucks can form long towing chains with little apparent performance penalty, though links become more likely to detach as the chain grows; a Rhino Tank cannot be pulled when it has equivalent mass.

Spawns and mission use

A reliable GTA V spawn is outside the Los Santos Customs garage on Greenwich Parkway near the La Puerta Freeway, behind Los Santos International Airport. Franklin receives one for towing work after buying the LSPD Auto Impound. Other reported locations include Dignity Village near Mount Chiliad, Ortega’s trailer by the Zancudo River, the northern edge of Sandy Shores, and highways where it may be driven in traffic.

The truck is used during a main-heist setup after being taken from its owner, then later by Franklin to ram an armoured van. Franklin also uses it throughout Tonya’s Strangers and Freaks towing missions, beginning with instruction on the hook controls. Grass Roots includes a uniquely painted example. During Scouting the Port, a parked example outside the restricted area carries the plate “5T3ALM3” and can be stored at Floyd’s Apartment.
